How Ears Work

Know the Types of Hearing Loss

Knowing the type of hearing loss you’re experiencing gets you one step closer to hearing the world around you more clearly.

Types of Hearing Loss

Each type of hearing loss has its own causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Understanding the differences is important for addressing symptoms early and finding the right support. If you suspect you may have hearing loss, a comprehensive hearing assessment is a great next step. At Triton Hearing, our expert clinical teams can help you create a personalised treatment plan and management strategy.

Below, we take a closer look at the three main types of hearing loss.

Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive hearing loss happens when sound waves can’t pass freely through the outer ear canal to the middle ear. Common causes include ear infections, fluid in the middle ear, earwax blockages, a perforated eardrum, or structural issues with the ear itself. In many cases, conductive hearing loss can be treated medically or surgically, helping to restore normal hearing.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the most common type of hearing loss. It happens when there’s damage to the inner ear or the nerve pathways that carry sound signals to the brain. Common causes include ageing, long-term exposure to loud noise, repeated or severe ear infections, head trauma, genetics, or certain illnesses.

Sensorineural hearing loss is usually permanent, but there are effective treatments available — including hearing aids and, in more severe cases, cochlear implants — to help improve hearing and quality of life.

Mixed Hearing Loss

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. It occurs when there is damage to both the outer or middle ear and the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve. Mixed hearing loss can develop from a variety of causes, reflecting the combined challenges of both types.
