Hearing Aid Funding Options
A range of funding options are available when purchasing hearing devices. We’ll guide you and make it easy to get started.
When navigating through the different types of hearing aid funding, it can be challenging to know where to begin. The good news is, we're here to help. Our expert team will walk you through all the funding options that are available to you, including government subsidies, hearing aids through ACC that do not require a surcharge*, Veterans’ Affairs, and more. Ministry of Health Subsidy Scheme
Available once every six years, the Ministry of Health subsidy scheme is the most common form of funding for hearing aids. The only criteria required are that you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and are over the age of 16. As the name suggests, the subsidy scheme will only subsidise the total cost of your hearing aid purchase by $511.11 per ear, or $1022.22 for a pair of hearing aids. Your audiologist can apply for this on your behalf. They will subtract the funding amount from your initial hearing aid quote.

Full-time caregiver for a dependent person
Undertake qualifying volunteer work

Devices through ACC that do not require a surcharge*
ACC offers different levels of funding for hearing aids depending on the cause and extent of your hearing loss. The amount of funding provided by ACC will depend on how much of your hearing loss is due to injury. Triton Hearing can provide hearing aid options with no surcharge for with all levels of ACC funding.
ACC funding is available for hearing solutions where 5% or more of your hearing loss is due to injury-related causes, including:
- Gradual onset hearing loss caused by extended exposure to noise at work
- Hearing loss caused by a traumatic event (e.g. a head injury or a sudden loud noise like an explosion)
- Hearing loss caused by some medical treatments

War Pensions/Veterans’ Affairs
If you are eligible, your audiologist will conduct a formal needs assessment and recommend a hearing aid model and/or accessories to your Veterans’ Affairs case manager for approval.
There is no cost to yo to receive hearing aids through Veteran's Affairs, however like ACC, you may choose to contribute to or top up the agreed funding value to receive a more sophisticated hearing aid model.

In addition to the four main hearing aid funding schemes, local charities or funds may be able to help contribute towards the cost of a hearing aid purchase. One notable fund is the Vincentian Foundation for the Elderly who provide hearing aid grants up to a maximum of $600 per hearing aid to those over the age of 65 with a dual SuperGold / Community Services Card. The National Foundation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is also currently providing hearing aid grants of up to $500 each for New Zealanders facing financial hardship. and the New Zealand Audiological Society Hearing Aid Fund provides $375 (excluding GST) per hearing aid to those in financial hardship who are otherwise not eligible for any form of government funding.
